Kate O’Connor teaches voice, piano, steel drum and acoustic guitar privately, remotely, and on location at Northampton Community Music Center and Downtown Sound in Northampton, MA.
Kate enjoys guiding her students to learn to sing and play with power, flexibility, range, emotion, sensitivity, and creativity. Whether you are a professional musician wanting to learn correct technique to make the most of your instrument, keep your voice/hands healthy, and have a long career; or you like to sing or play for fun and community, Kate’s patient and supportive instruction can inspire you to learn how do your best. Kate’s knowledge incorporates contemporary science of breathing, alignment, ergonomics, and Chinese energy protocols (qi gong) where appropriate.
Kate O'Connor has been a full time professional musician and music teacher for over 30 years. She performs regularly and teaches keyboards, vocals, beginner guitar, and steel drum for most styles of popular music and beginning to intermediate classical piano. She teaches music theory and songwriting. Kate has won best female vocalist awards in the Valley and Springfield Advocate’s readers’ poll for Western Massachusetts. Kate has recorded several cds of her original music, and has sung on many other artists recordings including vocal demos for over ten years for #1 hit songwriter and gold record winner Tony Romeo ("I Think I Love You").
Kate has been an adjunct jazz vocal professor at Smith College and at Springfield College. She studied music at UMASS, Ali Akbar College of Indian Music, and world music at Naropa Institute. She studied advanced voice with master vocal coach Oren Brown who was a brilliant teacher and vocal rehabilitator to many Broadway and opera stars, and corporate executives.
